Does faith simplify or reduce uncertainty? A book I’ve been reading had an interesting perspective of life, God, and faith. In the chapter entitled, Guaranteed Uncertainty, the author pushes the reader to explore faith’s relationship to an infinitely uncertain life and an infinitely complex God. He quotes Oswald Chambers in saying, “To be certain of God means that we are uncertain in all our ways…”
Did you get that? It’s not that we move through life with uncertainty. It’s that faith teaches us the proper place to put our certainty. Life does not come with a Satisfaction Guaranteed. That is why we place our certainty in the God who is our Shepherd, our Light, our Hope, our Deliverer. It is why we place our certainty in God’s infinite Word, Jesus Christ, becoming flesh. It is why we place our certainty in God’s Holy Spirit, our Comforter and our Guide.
The day will come when all uncertainties will be resolved; when that which is infinite will be known. It is the day when God’s Kingdom shall come on earth even as in heaven. Let that be our prayer and our aim. Let that be our embrace as we move forward as people of faith.
